Syracuse radio station switches to Christmas music weeks before Thanksgiving

It’s the most wonderful time of the year, so why not celebrate early?

Syracuse radio station Y94FM (WYYY-FM) switched to all Christmas music on Friday, nearly three weeks before Thanksgiving.

“Ho ho ho! If you’re up for some holiday tunes…check out Y94, in Syracuse or on the iHeartRadio app,” Y94’s Facebook page said.

The iHeartMedia-owned adult contemporary station switched to “Syracuse’s Christmas Station” around 5 p.m., updating its website and Facebook page with a red and green logo decorated with holly. Y94 usually plays Hot AC songs from the 80s to today, but started playing songs like “Jingle Bell Rock” by Brenda Lee, “Winter Wonderland” by Tony Bennett, “Run Run Rudolph” by Chuck Berry, ” Santa Tell Me” by Ariana Grande, Jose “Feliz Navidad” by Feliciano and “All I Want For Christmas Is You” by Mariah Carey.

Y94FM isn’t the only one spreading Christmas cheer early. Star 102.5 (WTSS-FM) at Buffalo and Albany area radio stations 98.3 WTRY (WTRY-FM) and 103.9 The Breeze (WPBZ-FM) all switched to the party format on Monday, November 1, the day after of Halloween.

Carey, whose music has been a holiday favorite every year since 1994, is okay with starting the Christmas season after Halloween. She posted a video at midnight on Nov. 1 showing her cracking a pumpkin and declaring “It’s time.” The diva also released a new song, “Fall in Love at Christmas” featuring Khalid and Kirk Franklin on Friday.

Y94’s switch only came a day earlier than in 2020, when it switched on Friday, November 6.

Another Syracuse radio station, Lights on the Lake sponsor Sunny 102 (WZUN-FM), became “Santa 102” on Nov. 4 last year but did not begin decorating theaters this year. The Galaxy-owned broadcaster typically doesn’t change formats until mid-November.

Other radio stations that switched to holiday music last week included Star 105.7 (WSRW-FM) in Grand Rapids, Michigan; Sunny 106.5 (KSNE-FM) in Las Vegas, Nevada; and 93.9 LITE FM (WLIT-FM) in Chicago, Illinois. SiriusXM Satellite Radio has also launched 19 holiday channels, including Country Christmas, Holiday Traditions, Radio Hanukah and Essential Christmas.
