Deputy gubernatorial candidate petitions NBC over radio station’s ‘defection’ story

A New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) Deputy Governor candidate in Akwa Ibom State, Godwin Afangideh, has asked the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) to “punish” Passion FM for allegedly broadcasting “fake news”.

Passion 94.5 FM is a private radio station based in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

Mr Afangideh, in a petition dated August 30, accused the radio station of falsely announcing that he had defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

“By broadcasting this fake news, Passion FM broke the broadcasting code and the law. It is illegal for a radio station to broadcast false and offensive news. Passion FM therefore broke the law. They should be punished for this.

“I therefore urge NBC to call Passion FM to order. Passion FM should refrain from spreading false news against me, my person and my political party,” he said.

Mr Afangideh, a former state agriculture commissioner, is a former member of the APC but had since left the party for the NNPP where he was nominated as a candidate for deputy governor.

He joined the NNPP after John Akpanudoedehe, former national secretary of the APC, defected at the NNPP where he selected the party’s gubernatorial candidate in the state for the 2023 election.

He’s not a journalist – Passion FM

Passion FM Managing Director Ikechukwu Juwe when contacted called the allegation “laughable”. He challenged Mr. Afangideh to provide a recording of the said broadcast.

Mr Juwe told PREMIUM TIMES that the station is not reporting the nominee for NNPP Deputy Governor because the nominee “is not a journalist”.

He said, however, that the station is waiting for NBC to contact them about it.
