Auckland mayoral candidate Efeso Collins says he was appalled by the racism he encountered during his campaign, but when he sat down and spoke with people, the prejudice disappeared.

Mr Collins, who has a Samoan and Tokelauan whakapapa, is the favourite, says he has had a slight security detail on hand at some events due to racial threats, but that hasn’t stopped honest conversations .

“My focus has been on how to break down some of these attitudes that don’t belong in today’s society, but you have to play in the middle, you have to be careful with the actions you take. I hope people will look at the way I myself have navigated this campaign and think ‘this is the kind of leadership we want, someone who accepts there are challenges but will go through with it. ‘come out of this in such a way that we’ll have a city that’s going to come together and be one with a combined vision that we can all work towards,’ because I think that’s what’s really important,” says- he.

Mr. Collins says he is drawing support from across the city, and is not just counting on the vote of the South and Brown.
